Product Description: A weighty wooden chest with brass-style edging. The box opens to reveal a series of miniature concertina books, all contained within individual cellophane wraps. One of these, entitled the ‘Australia Scroll’ depicts the historic development of the country. Each concertina is subsequently assigned a location and the inkjet printed imagery marks it’s growth within a sequential format. Whilst some are monochromatic, the ‘Australia Scroll’ is vibrant, with rich natural colours being used to reflect the Australian countryside.
Underneath these books is the main concertina. This measures 35 cm x 16.5 cm and contains over 20 panels. The narrative marks the transitioning of Britain, becoming a world empire. The ink-based drawings have been inkjet printed upon the Fabriano paper. Varying uses of white space act as a marker of the instability and violence apparent throughout British history.
Mackintosh claims this piece was ‘influenced by the Bayeux Tapestry’, stating that his aim is to ‘create highly detailed ink stories and landscapes’.
These books sit upon a series of brackets within the box, protecting them. On the interior lid of the chest is an acrylic painting of a world map, contrasting the primarily monochromatic books.

Super Replica: Issue A (Sexy Machinery)

Product Description: An A4 white, glossy folder containing a variety of written documents. The authors describe the product: “Issue A, Super Replica, is a bootleg about bootlegging containing fakes, copyrighted material, free recipes, proposals for open-source projects, replica fragrances and other findings from the wider culture of copyright in general”. Conclusively, the book is described as ‘ a genuine fake’.
The imagery inside the folder has been appropriately made, reflecting the original documents origins. Many have been produced on a variety of paper types, such as dense newsprint with serif-based traditional type commonplace within legal documentation.
Finally, a silver clip holds in all the documentation.

 Product Description: An A5, three-point stab-stitched book. The exterior of the book has been constructed using black card. The border has been decorated with white thread, matching that used to bind the book. Juxtaposing the front of the black cover is a white tooth. The interior pages are a lightweight, yellow card. A gear-like lino-print adorns the front page in a deep red. This seal is used consistently throughout the book, in varying colors. On each left hand page is a small sentence, written in a hand rendered, serif typeface.
The narrative documents the concept of submission within a Big-Brother type state. The seal used throughout the book is likely the icon of those in power. Conclusively, the final page describes Big Brother as ‘your one pillar of reality’.

Scrolls

SCROLLS

Product description: An A5, dated hard back book covered in a vibrant red book cloth. Wrapped around the book is an elastic black band.
Once removed, the book is opened to reveal the tale: “Wing Leader”, memoirs of former Air Vice Marshall ‘Johnnie’ Johnson.
Yet when the book is fully opened up, the viewer can observe that the interior of the book has been carved out. The sides have been reinforced and structured through the use of PVA glue.
Inside the book are a series of eight miniature scrolls, each stained with coffee and bound using dried palm leaves. The scrolls detail the day-to-day life of a captured inmate who had been imprisoned by a corrupt government
To accompany the narrative are a pencil, button and a crucifix, presumed to be the inmates’ remaining items.

South Atlantic Journey

Product Description: A pocket-sized book congaing photographic imagery the Atlantic. Each image has been printed, and mounted onto the pages of the book. The exterior is completely white, other than a brief summary and a stamped title: “Copyright M H Elsom”. The book includes two separate cards, one a description of the piece and the other a business card.
The description provided by the artist reads: “Inspired largely by Allan Sekula’s Fish Story, the Copyright M H Elsom series of books evolved from my fine art degree at Portsmouth University. Each book is a limited edition of 10 copies, is handmade and unique.”

Some Time With You

Product Description: An A5 book, containing laser printed pages. The original images are watercolor, combined with a brown, serif-font. The exterior of the book is covered in brown, bumpy cloth which is then contained within a laser-printed sleeve.

Healy visualizes the inner thoughts of a series of dogs and their longing for their owners attention. “Some time with you” is repeated throughout the book, reinforcing the gloomy notion that the dog is isolated. In the blurb, Healy reveals: “the text in this book is adapted form the lyrics of ‘You and Your Sister’ by This Mortal Coil, 4AD Records”.

Healy consistently leaves large, blank spaces perhaps to reinforce the isolation of each animal.

Description: This is a hardback book with an illustrated paper dust jacket cover. The inside pages are printed on silk white paper. The book is 16 cm x 22 cm with 32 pages.  The images in ‘Some Time With You’ tell the story of longing, loneliness and hope from an abandoned dog’s perspective. As you turn each page, your presence causes the dogs to cower in fright, approach you with hope, or receive you with love. I have been involved in domestic and wildlife rescue for a number of years and acknowledge how difficult it is to avoid cliché when making artwork that has such an emotive and sentimental content. When painting these dogs, I chose to eliminate all unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the way they gazed at me one damp May morning, as I stood in the concrete corridor between the cold grey kennels, my heart burning

Description: Hardback artists' book: Length 230 mm, Width 160mm, Depth 20mm. The book is produced from found paper and printed material in various weights and colours. These are bound into a book of eighty pages. The white paper cover is handpainted and stamped with a photocopied belly band. The book is stapled and glued to black end papers. The book is an exciting mix of found printed pages bought together in a random way. Its concept is the recycling of unwanted and discarded paper and printed material which could be used as a sketchbook. The random cojoining of images also allows the viewer to appreciate the visual delights of the printed ephemera that we discard on a daily basis.

A soft back 14.8cm x 10.5cm portrait 24 page book. The cover is made from brown card. Paper is textured recycled paper with a stapled binding. The book was produced as part of 'Evil" an exhibition and conference at the University of Southampton in May 1998. Each page gives a textual description of plants and their poisonous qualities. The dedications below with names, bottles of wine and dates imply that these poisons were put into their drinks with dire consequences.

Description: Boxed artists' book: Length 440 mm, Width 310mm, Depth 15mm. Containing 3 x concertina books 420mm x 100mm. 7 pages on heavyweight matte paper. Grey millboard covers with screen-printed trace flysheets. The book is presented as a trinity of books that sit inside a black box with a screen-printed cover. This book is an attempt to reveal to the viewer the concept of isolating and conjoining map elements. It centers on the visual perspective through the use of recurring concepts of macro/micro, map types, and the notion that ÔmapnessÕ surrounds us where colours, shapes, images and lines in natural and technical objects bring to mind images of landmass, mountain ranges, contours, oceans, rivers, roads, cities and towns from globes and atlases. Cross-section is used to construct a panorama detailing spectrums from cosmos to areas that are mapped in the microcosm with relevant points between, the fulcrum of the scale being man indicated by images representing the brain.

Description: This book measures 290mm in length and 210mm in width. Stitched and produced using letterpress cut and crease. It is completed by a paper wrap around cover. This book uses paper engineering to utilise pop-up techniques which alows for gently unfolding letter forms. These are used as illustrations for an alphabetical poem.
