The rubber-stamped hands are drawn from her own hands on the keyboard, exaggerated as the concertina unfolds. The book seeks to capture the love of listening to beautiful piano music and the realisation that this is unattainable for the player.

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "Trebuchet MS"; font-size: 10pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "Trebuchet MS"; font-size: 10pt; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">From around 1880 a standard piano keyboard measurement has been fixed at 48” this replaced various piano-like instruments that traditionally had narrower keys. The average European adult male hand span is about one inch wider than that of a European adult woman meaning about 87% of women piano players can’t reach a tenth on a standard piano, which is a problem if you want to play Beethoven.
WOODEN CUPBOARD
Unknown Author

Product Description: A miniature wooden cupboard. The door opens to reveal three separate panels. One contains a series of hand-made books, all of which have empty pages. All three books have been stab-stitched and covered in a material, a red plastic sheet or a worn-weaved, sack-like material. In the above compartment is another book. This item has been wrapped in brown paper, hardened by a form of adhesive and a layer of plastic. The straps binding the book together are made from a form of hair. Within this book are a series of obscure images, over-exposed interpretations of the female form. These images have been stitched in, prior to adding a layer of an unknown adhesive.
Within the third compartment are a series of thin fabric sheets, all of which have been hung to suit the wardrobe format. These have been printed upon using similar imagery to that of the handmade books. A quote states, “a certain amount of violence was permitted but only if his wife deserved it”. It becomes apparent that the references towards the female form may be about the way the antagonist has treated it.
Underneath the cupboard is a large drawer. Within this are three separate faces constructed out of a white mould. The moulds look very solemn. They are accompanied by numeric labels.
Publication Details: Miniature wooden cupboard, Handmade stab-stitched books, Inkjet printed Imagery, Fabric panels.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com59tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8020328027205184639.post-70895771999586409592015-04-09T03:40:00.005-07:002015-04-09T03:40:56.891-07:00What are you collecting at the moment Mark?

On the coffin’s lid are the words ‘R.I.P Lucy Westerna’.
Upon opening, a china doll is revealed. Her dress has imprints of text upon it, and is an off white. She has a neutral-toned Venetian mask on. When this is removed, the viewer can see that the doll’s eyes are a vibrant red, as are her lips. This contrasts her porcelain complexion and white dress. Equally, the lining of the coffin has been cushioned. The fabric is a silky white with glittering embellishment.
Publication Details: Miniature white wooden coffin, Porcelain china doll.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8020328027205184639.post-2828402812841758522015-04-09T03:34:00.002-07:002015-04-09T03:34:30.573-07:00The Button Box

DECADES
Emily Regan

Product Description: A collaborative zine between five artists. The exterior has been coated in a parcel-like brown paper. The title of ‘Decades’ has been printed onto it using cellulose thinner. All of the interior imagery has been laser printed onto the basic white copy paper. Each artist has been assigned a double-page spread and asked to create a response to a particular decade (1950 – 1990). Visual responses vary between basic line drawings to over-exposed photocopied imagery.
Publication Details: Brown-paper wrapped A5 zine, Laser printed imagery, staple bound.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8020328027205184639.post-84866990301504136852015-04-09T03:31:00.001-07:002015-04-09T03:31:42.749-07:00Hidden Agenda

HIDDEN AGENDA
Emily Regan

Product Description: A large leather suitcase containing a flesh-like interior made from unknown materials. Found inside is a series of random ephemera, such as a tie and a pair of shoes, suited to the suitcase’s original function. Accompanying this is a small, concertina book bound with burgundy book cloth. Inside are a series of polaroid-like images, all of which were originally pen-based drawings. A second concertina is also included, this one being landscape and bound in brown book cloth. The images are watercolour and narrate the arrival of an unknown man in Paris.
Regan included a description: ‘The young artist that owns this suitcase is a person with a very perverse and manipulative nature that has manifested itself into the hub of his travels. The inside of the case is a flesh like landscape of organic curves and crevasses, with opening that contain flesh like pockets and ripples of the skin.’
Publication Details: Large leather suitcase, Silicone-like interior, Hardback concertina books, Various ephemera.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8020328027205184639.post-21628030000640659602015-04-09T03:29:00.002-07:002015-04-09T03:29:43.674-07:00Disguise Kit Suitcase

DISGUISE KIT SUITCASE
Unknown (Alumni)

Product Description: A small maroon leather suitcase with worn edges. The unassuming item opens to reveal a sectioned-interior. Four panels each contain various elements contributing to the aim of creating a disguise. The first section contains a series of rubber stamps, all of which have been used. In the second section are a series of passports, each with a different identity. It is within these that the stamps from the previous section have been used. As with all the documents within the case, the passports have been inkjet printed or hand letter-pressed. The pages have also been tea-stained. In the third section the reader can find a pair of reading glasses, accompanied by a series of forged birth certificates. In the final section is a nine-point stab-stitched booklet, bound with string and coated within a washed-yellow sugar paper. The book contains notes regarding the hunt for Phileas Fogg. It is then the reader understands that the suitcase has been created as response to the book ‘Around The World in 80 Days’.
On the inside lid is a mirror, scissors, tweezers and a series of moustaches, all contributing to the concept of identity concealment.
Publication Details: Leather suitcase, Panelled interior, Rubbers, tea-stained documentation, Stab-Stitched book, Various other ephemera.
GREEN LINE
Jamie Hillier

Product Description: A wooden box decorated with a monochromatic sticker entitled ‘Explosif’ and some stencilled type. Once pried upon, the viewer can see a crisp-white cover. Across the front are two silkscreen printed strips of barbed wires, one black and the other green. Accompanying this is a series of five cut-out strips, perhaps symbolizing prison bars. Beneath the cut-out is what seems to be a war zone; green-toned imagery has been laser printed and sealed to the book.
When unfolded, the book reveals itself to be a concertina-accordion hybrid with each section containing it’s own detailed and layered cut-out. The barbed wire carries on throughout. This, alongside the various cut-outs, accompanies the letter-pressed typeface. It is through this that the viewer learns the book is a response to the 1974 invasion of Cyprus and the subsequent lives that were lost or, reported missing. The scenserity of the topic is reflected in the clean construction, limited colour pallet and the concealment of background imagery.
Upon a thin, tracing paper sheet is the author’s name and contact details. This sits on top of the book.
Publication Details: Wooden box, White card, Concertina book, Silkscreen printed imagery with letterpress type, Cut-out panels.

The instruments have been pinned to the side, juxtaposing the white, silkscreen printed type describing the items musical quality. Contained within the structures' centre is a pot of pencils, continuing with the stationary-based theme.
Around the outside of the concertina is a large landscape print, illustrating the possible symphony one can make.
THE SCROLL OF BRITAIN
Arran Mackintosh (Alumni)

Product Description: A weighty wooden chest with brass-style edging. The box opens to reveal a series of miniature concertina books, all contained within individual cellophane wraps. One of these, entitled the ‘Australia Scroll’ depicts the historic development of the country. Each concertina is subsequently assigned a location and the inkjet printed imagery marks it’s growth within a sequential format. Whilst some are monochromatic, the ‘Australia Scroll’ is vibrant, with rich natural colours being used to reflect the Australian countryside.
Underneath these books is the main concertina. This measures 35 cm x 16.5 cm and contains over 20 panels. The narrative marks the transitioning of Britain, becoming a world empire. The ink-based drawings have been inkjet printed upon the Fabriano paper. Varying uses of white space act as a marker of the instability and violence apparent throughout British history.
Mackintosh claims this piece was ‘influenced by the Bayeux Tapestry’, stating that his aim is to ‘create highly detailed ink stories and landscapes’.
These books sit upon a series of brackets within the box, protecting them. On the interior lid of the chest is an acrylic painting of a world map, contrasting the primarily monochromatic books.
Publication Details: 2012, Wooden hinged chest, Textured Fabriano paper, Inkjet printed imagery, Five external (miniature) concertina books within cellophane.

Mackaroni.co.ukUnknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8020328027205184639.post-61839316857150125532015-04-09T03:18:00.002-07:002015-04-09T03:18:46.624-07:00Our Old Curiosity Shop

The prints are upon an unknown, high gsm paper. The belly band is also made from this material.
The artist states: “I was interested in it’s themes of time passing, New Year and hope. I chose 12 symbols from the story.”. Tierney has completed a direct visual response to Dickens’ book, using recognizable and detailed imagery. The dustiness of each image, a result of the etching process, is contrasted by splashes of pinks, altering the mood of the book.
Tierney explains her use of the etching process: “‘The Chimes’ was written and published in 1844, and the star wheel etching press I used to make the print was made in 1843. It is the same type of press that William Brake would have used”.
The concertina structured has been glued within an unknown adhesive and sealed a light, white paper for reinforcement.
Publication Details: Southsea, 2012, Miniature concertina book, Etched imagery.
A CAST OF CHARACTERS FROM ‘THE CHIMES’ BY CHARLES DICKENS
Neal Layton

Product Description: One of several books created for the ‘Beyond Dickens’ exhibition, organized by the University of Portsmouth and curated by Ros Simms.
This book is A5, staple-bound with laser printed imagery. A variety of hand rendered type-forms adorn the front, surrounded by an elaborate border.
Layton says: “One of the things that interests me most about Dickens’ work is the characters he created; they are at once recognisable”. Each page contains a delightful illustration of one of the many characters within ‘The Chimes’. These simplistic line drawings are juxtaposed by more hand rendered type, elaborating upon who they area, alongside a brief summary. For example, “Margaret ‘Meg’ Veck – ‘Eyes that were beautiful and true, and beaming with hope’”.
As with many publications of this kind, the book is monochromatic. The back of the book contains much more elaborate and bright imagery, demonstrating the breadth of plant life within the natural world. ‘Take a Leaf’ is contained within a miniature belly band, a small strip of faded green paper sealed with an unknown adhesive.
Publication Details: 2008, 8 cm x 5 cm concertina book, Cartridge Paper, Inkjet printed Imagery.

Yumiokuda.comUnknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8020328027205184639.post-36723857128707101512015-03-19T06:34:00.003-07:002015-03-19T06:34:52.767-07:00Threads & Wedlock

THE WANDERLUST DIARY
Nick Willis

Product Description: A square, concertina book. The exterior of the book is lightweight (unknown material), bound in a silky brown cloth. A vibrant green image sits on the front, a computer-based illustration introducing ‘The Wanderlust Diary’. The interior pages have been laser printed. They contain a variety of imagery, much of which are pen-drawn illustrations, colored using software. The concertina fold lends itself to the sequential narrative with each panel introducing a new scene and concept. The story follows the protagonist through a bizarre adventure. Many of his interactions reference everyday life, such as getting a train, meeting people in suits, etc. A serif-based type sits amongst the imagery, filling the blank spaces. The back and front pages have a light-brown coloring and contain a repeat pattern of various watch faces.
Publication Details: 2009, Nick Brown, Fabric-bound exterior, Concertina fold, Inkjet printed imagery.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2
